BILLYBADBIRD - Part one of four. The true amazing story of Billybadbird versus Cat1 Hurricane Ike - September 2008.... Port Bolivar Peninsula, Texas.
Port Bolivar peninsula is flat; it does not have a sea-wall for protection like nearby Galveston...
...the approaching hurricane ‘IKE’ was being called a Cat 1 and people were told not to worry.
The local constables wrote Billybadbird’s name Wilford Raney and his social security number in water-proof ink for identification purposes on his arm as he had been unable to get into the 'fort' 3 days before the storm.... In Billy's own words 'So they would know who I was if I died'. (Billy was actually on the dead list for a week).
When Billybadbird went home to get some rest before IKE was due, the sea was calm ...when he woke up, the force of the hurricane was smashing his house down!!! That was when he had to escape...
He got to his balcony where Blackhawk helicopters were circling to rescue him......
The folk who had chosen to stay put witnessed a 20 foot surge of immense power, washing 5500 homes off Port Bolivar two days before IKE even reached landfall...
peace man/woman/child of the Universe.
Natural disasters change peoples lives and remind us of the fragile nature of this life. They humble us which is good, being humble helps us not waste the present moment. It allows us the chance to reconnect with humanity and remember that we are apart of a bigger picture than just our immediate sphere of influence.
Billybird has a special relationship with the coastal area of his home at Port Bolivar Texas and
knows the area in close detail after years on the peninsula.
